Precision. Durability. Beauty.
At The Lawn Artist, our patios are more than just surface-level upgrades—they’re carefully engineered outdoor living spaces built to last. Every project is backed by our 5-Year Hardscape Warranty, giving you peace of mind along with beautiful results. Here’s how we build our patios the right way—every time:
Our Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Mark off the area and set the depth to be excavated according to the design plans.
Step 2: Excavate 12 inches below the final paver height and 12 inches beyond the planned patio edge. Compact the subgrade, install construction fabric to separate layers and improve long-term durability.
Step 3: Install a ¾-inch clean crushed stone base, compacted in layers (lifts), then add another layer of construction fabric for strength and separation.
Step 4: Use screed rails to evenly distribute a 1-inch ¼-inch clean crushed stone bedding layer, then apply another layer of construction fabric for added integrity.
Step 5: Lay pavers in a tightly interlocked pattern, cut to fit as per design. Compact the entire patio to ensure stability. One foot of the base remains exposed to prevent edge failure.
Step 6: Install aluminum paver edging, specifically designed for permeable base systems, along the exposed perimeter.
Step 7: Sweep polymeric sand into the joints, compact again, and finish by blowing off any dust. Activate the sand with water to harden and lock everything in place.
Step 8: Apply loam and seed along patio edges to restore turf and cover any visible base material—leaving the site clean and green.
The Challenges In The Design
This patio project required careful planning to adapt to uneven terrain and existing landscaping features. Managing drainage without disrupting the lawn or surrounding plant beds posed a unique challenge. The client also requested a long-term solution to edge failure—a common issue in DIY or poorly built patios—so we adjusted the base design to ensure lasting integrity. Working within tight property lines and preserving nearby turf and beds added complexity to equipment access and material handling.
The Final Landscape Design
The completed patio is a durable, stylish outdoor space that blends seamlessly into the yard. The interlocking paver design offers a crisp, modern look while the carefully engineered base ensures structural integrity for years to come. Edging is clean and secure, and all turf disturbed during construction was restored with loam and seed. The result? A patio that not only enhances the backyard’s function and beauty—but stands strong through every season.
